The APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) helps build your career by achieving a broad level of project management knowledge sufficient to participate in projects of all sizes. By the end of the course, you'll be able to demonstrate an understanding of how critical elements of project management interact and how your project fits into your strategic and commercial environment.

The attainment of accreditations offered by professional bodies such as the Association for Project Management (APM) is increasingly seen as a recognised indicator of competence in project management. For example, APM PMQ is an internationally recognised knowledge-based qualification (IPMA Level D) that enables individuals to demonstrate their knowledge to deliver projects successfully.

This event is a mixture of input and practical sessions delivered by an APM-approved trainer. All trainers have practical experience in project management. Practical sessions are on an individual and team basis and feature throughout the event.

Exam vouchers are provided, and the candidates can schedule an exam with the APM Proctor service at their convenience.

APM PMQ assesses all areas of project management in a more practical, strategic and commercial way, such as budgeting and cost management, conflict management, communication, earned value management, leadership, negotiation, procurement, sponsorship and teamwork.

  • Attendees would benefit from possessing good basic project management skills or attending the APM Project Fundamentals Qualification course.
  • Ideally, a minimum of 6 months of experience working on a project would also be beneficial.

Event preparation materials will be provided to delegates in advance of the course. 5-10 hours of preparation is required to complete the pre-course study.

APM PMQ assesses all areas of project management in a more practical, strategic and commercial way, such as budgeting and cost management, conflict management, communication, earned value management, leadership, negotiation, procurement, sponsorship and teamwork.  

The APM PMQ exam is a three-hour, 'closed-book', essay-style paper. In this paper, candidates must answer 10 of 16 questions covering 37 topics. The pass mark is 55%.

Yes. Photographic proof of identity is required before taking your exam. The image is stored only in the exam recording, which is reviewed to ensure exam compliance and is kept securely in a cloud system for six months. Please see the ProctorExam privacy policy and APMs privacy policy.

You will need to install exam control software on your computer before your exam session. Please watch the video and read the instructions for more information: Online examinations: what to expect (apm.org.uk). You will need to have a smartphone available for your exam session, download an app and use it as a secondary recording device. This is in addition to your computer. The exam checks will add 15 minutes to your exam session.

You will receive your exam access email from APM 3 days before your exam session.
