Frequently Asked Questions
What is this course about? In this hands-on course, you gain the fundamental knowledge and skills to create and configure Oracle Database 11g, Release 2, manage memory and storage effectively and deploy essential procedures to maintain your organisation's data. You also learn to control user activity, perform flashback operations and partition large tables for ease of management.During this course, you gain experience with a variety of Oracle tools including Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 11g Database Control, Data Pump and SQL*Plus.Who will benefit from this course? With the increased options in Oracle 11g, Release 2, database administrators need to learn how to make appropriate use of these tools and acquire the necessary expertise to employ them effectively. This course is designed for professionals whose work involves or will involve the administration of an Oracle 11g database:Database administrators who have had experience administering databases other than Oracle and who need to learn how to perform the administration tasks that are unique to Oracle 11g;Application or systems developers who find that their role is being changed to one of a DBA or assistant DBA, or who are interested in the techniques used to properly administer Oracle 11g databases; andSystems administrators who want to learn how to properly manage the available system resources to effectively run Oracle 11g on their machines. What background should I have? You should have some background and experience working with a SQL-based RDBMS. Experience equivalent to
Course 926, Oracle® Database 11g: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, or
Course 593, Oracle® Database 10g: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, is assumed.
Course 234, Developing SQL Queries for Oracle® Databases: Hands-On, is helpful but not required. What is the Oracle database server?Oracle database server is a complex relational DBMS that supports large-scale databases and enables high-speed transactions, better business decisions and sophisticated applications. The most popular versions supported are Oracle Database 11g R2 and Oracle10g. Oracle 11g and 10g include many automated features to create the ?self-managing? database. If it's self-managing, why do I need training? The automated features in Oracle can be helpful to companies with smaller installations of Oracle and staff with limited database administration expertise. However, some of the automated features in Oracle are optional (available at additional cost) and are not intended to replace traditional DBA activities. The full spectrum of Oracle functionality cannot be administered using the graphical interface and automated tools. In order to fully realize the power of Oracle databases, a database administrator must know how to perform traditional database administration functions from the command line. This approach not only allows more control over the database, but command line skills are also portable.
Not all Oracle shops will use the graphical interface due to the system overhead required to run them, however Oracle DBAs who know how to perform DBA functions through the command line will be able to perform database maintenance for all Oracle installations.
Learning Tree courses teach both the command line as well as the graphical and automated tools to equip participants with essential knowledge to select and apply the best method. How does Oracle Database 11g differ from Oracle 10g?Oracle 11g is a superset of Oracle 10g and Oracle 9i. This version has enhanced features for increased manageability and provides an improved graphical interface within Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 11g Database Control to facilitate database administration. In addition, Oracle 11g continues to offer the well-established tools and features that finely control database activity. What version of Oracle is used? This course is currently running on Oracle 11g, Release 2, on the Windows Server 2003 platform. Is this course useful to me if I work with an earlier version of Oracle? This course gives an introduction to database administration on Oracle 11g. If you are evaluating Oracle 11g, or if you are currently working on an earlier version but are planning to move to administration on Oracle 11g, then this course is for you.How much time is spent on each topic?| Content | Hours | | Introduction to Oracle Database 11g administration | 3.0 | | Building an Oracle 11g database | 3.0 | | Automating database management | 4.0 | | Performing flashback operations | 3.0 | | Securing the database | 3.0 | | Controlling database storage | 3.0 | | Partitioning to support administration and availability | 4.0 | Times, including the workshops, are estimates; exact times may vary according to the needs of each class. What kinds of hands-on exercises are included?Approximately 40 percent of class time is devoted to hands-on exercises. Hands-on exercises focus on performing basic and advanced database administration tasks using command line and graphical tools. These include starting and stopping an instance, creating an Oracle 11g database, creating, altering and dropping tablespaces, managing rollback with UNDO tablespaces, creating users, granting system and object privileges to users, creating partitions, resuming failed SQL statements, performing flashback operations, setting thresholds and creating alerts. Will it matter if I use Oracle on a different platform such as UNIX or Linux? No, most of the topics covered are not operating system-specific. However, issues that are affected by the operating system are highlighted and the differences are noted in the course.Does this course cover grid computing and RAC?This course covers fundamental Oracle skills applicable to all Oracle environments. While grid concepts are briefly discussed, grid computing and RAC are specialised installations requiring specific skills and knowledge beyond the scope of this course. How does this course relate to other Learning Tree courses?Learning Tree offers a number of courses that will help you expand upon the knowledge gained in this course and further your skills in several key areas.
