SQL Server 2000 Database Administration: Hands-On

Course: 531   Type: Hands-On   Duration: 5 Days

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this course about?

In this course, you perform the critical tasks of installing and upgrading Microsoft SQL Server 2000, as well as creating a database and managing its operation. Vital functions such as backup and recovery, and security management receive extensive coverage.

Who will benefit from this course?

This course is designed for people whose work involves or will involve the administration of a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. Typical participants include database administrators, system administrators, and application and system developers. The course addresses the jobs performed by both a system administrator (typically custodian of resources and responsible for tuning) and a database administrator (usually responsible for security, backup and recovery, and task scheduling).

Database administrators who have had experience with databases other than Microsoft SQL Server learn how to perform the tasks that are unique to Microsoft SQL Server.

Application or system developers who find that their role is expanding to include database administration learn the tasks necessary to properly administer a Microsoft SQL Server relational database management system.

System administrators, whether they have database administration responsibilities or not, learn how to properly manage the available system resources to allow Microsoft SQL Server to run effectively.

If I have taken a SQL Server 7 administration course, should I take this course?

You would probably not benefit from taking this course if you have already taken a SQL Server 7 administration course. While there are some significant new administrative features in SQL Server 2000, the tools and concepts remain fundamentally the same.

I have been a SQL Server 6.5 administrator. Would I find this course useful?

Yes! SQL Server 2000's administrative environment and tools are very different from those of the 6.5 version. In this course, you learn how to use the many new tools and how to understand the fundamental changes to the product.

What background should I have?

You should have some background and experience working with a relational database. You should have a working knowledge of computers and experience using either Windows NT 4 or Windows 2000. Course 530, SQL Server 2000 Comprehensive Introduction: Hands-On, provides the required background. Knowledge of programming would be helpful but is not required.

What kinds of hands-on exercises are included in this course?

We conduct a variety of hands-on exercises in which you perform basic and advanced database administration tasks. These include installing multiple instances of SQL Server 2000, managing storage, performing routine maintenance, backup and recovery of system and user databases, managing security, scheduling multistep jobs, setting up alerts and implementing transactional replication.

What platform is used for the hands-on exercises?

We use Microsoft SQL Server 2000 running on Windows 2003 Server.

I'm planning to run SQL Server 2000 on Windows NT 4. Is this course useful for me?

Yes. Nearly all of the features of SQL Server 2000 work the same way on Windows NT 4 as they do on Windows 2000. The major exception is some advanced security features that are only available through Windows 2000.

Why should I attend this course rather than one of the Microsoft courses?

Our very independence from Microsoft (and any other vendor) allows us to give an unbiased view of what works and what does not. This course has been researched and developed independently from Microsoft Corporation and is objective in its approach.

Does this course help me prepare for any Microsoft Certified Professional exams?

This course helps you prepare for the Microsoft exam Installing, Configuring and Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (Exam 70-228). For more information, please refer to the Learning Tree Microsoft Certification and Testing Q&A.

How does this course relate to other Learning Tree courses?
