Frequently Asked Questions
What is this course about? In this course, you gain in-depth knowledge of Oracle application development. The extensive hands-on exercises provide you with valuable opportunities to practise solving business problems related to application development issues. You develop PL/SQL procedures, functions, packages and work with Oracle-provided utilities for application maintenance and security. You also work with a variety of error handling techniques. In addition, you gain an extensive background in tuning. You work with the tuning diagnostic tools, understand and influence the optimiser, work with indexes and alternative storage structures, and examine and work with many application tuning examples. What background should I have? This course concentrates on a selection of topics applicable to application development using Oracle. This is not an introductory course. If you are new to Oracle or want to review the basics of SQL and/or PL/SQL, you should take Course 593, Oracle® Database 10g: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, or Course 925, SQL Programming Language: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction. You should have some background and experience working with a SQL-based RDBMS and a working knowledge of Oracle's PL/SQL. Course 493, Oracle® PL/SQL Programming: Hands-On, provides extensive hands-on experience writing PL/SQL programs.Who will benefit from this course? This course benefits a wide range of professionals including: Programmers, application designers, developers and systems analysts who are designing and writing Oracle applications using Oracle Those who are migrating from Oracle7 to Oracle8i or Oracle9i; or from Oracle8i to Oracle9i; or from Oracle9i to Oracle 10g Data processing professionals who may have many years' experience working with traditional database systems (relational, hierarchical or network) and who are now moving to Oracle Database administrators who want to acquire a deeper understanding of Oracle development concepts IT managers and project leaders who need a general overview of the application development process What version of Oracle is used?
This course is currently running on Oracle 10g, Release 2 on the Windows platform. Is this course useful if I'm working
with an earlier version of Oracle?
This course covers application development and tuning using Oracle databases. In addition, the features useful for developers introduced in Oracle8I, Oracle9I, and Oracle 10g are covered and identified using "8i", "9i", and "10g" icons. If you are currently on an earlier version but are planning to migrate to a later version, this course is for you. Will the material I learn be relevant
for my UNIX (or VMS) shop?
Yes, Oracle and the topics covered are platform-independent. Everything you learn is applicable to a UNIX, Windows, or VMS environment. How much time is spent on each topic?| Content | Hours | | Introduction to the application environment | 3.0 | | Preparing the database | 3.5 | | Maintaining the database | 5.0 | | Exploiting Oracle built-in packages | 5.5 | | Enforcing security | 1.5 | | Improving query performance | 5.0 | | Deciphering and controlling the optimiser | 4.0 | | Tuning the application | 6.0 | Times, including the workshops, are estimates; exact times may vary according to the needs of each class. What kinds of hands-on exercises
are included in the course?
Throughout the course, a continous case study provides in-depth and hands-on experience building and tuning applications in an Oracle environment. Exercises include: Using SQL*Loader and external tables Building applications using triggers, procedures and packages Enhancing applications using Oracle-provided packages Dealing with common problems Establishing database and program-enforced
