What is this course about?

In this course, you gain in-depth knowledge of Oracle application development. The extensive hands-on exercises provide you with valuable opportunities to practice solving business problems related to application development issues. You work with a number of Oracle-provided utilities for application maintenance and security including job scheduling, working with LOBs, managing statistics, and others.

In addition, you gain an extensive background in tuning. You work with the tuning diagnostic tools including several of Oracle's automated tuning tools, understand and influence the optimizer, work with indexes and alternative storage structures, and examine and work with application tuning examples.

What background should I have?

This course concentrates on a selection of topics applicable to application development using Oracle. This is not an introductory course. If you are new to Oracle or want to review the basics of SQL and/or PL/SQL, you should take Course 926, Oracle® Database 11g: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, or Course 925, SQL Programming Language: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction. You should have some background and experience working with a SQL-based RDBMS and a working knowledge of Oracle's PL/SQL. Course 493, Oracle® PL/SQL Programming: Hands-On, provides extensive hands-on experience writing PL/SQL programs.

Is this course useful if I'm working with an earlier version of Oracle?

This course covers application development and tuning using Oracle databases. In addition, the features useful for developers introduced in Oracle9i,Oracle 10g and Oracle 11g are covered and identified using "9i", "10g ", and "11g" icons. If you are currently on an earlier version but are planning to migrate to a later version, this course is for you.

Will the material I learn be relevant for my UNIX (or VMS) shop?

Yes, Oracle and the topics covered are platform-independent. Everything you learn is applicable to a UNIX, Windows, or VMS environment.

Approximately 40 percent of class time is spent in hands-on exercises. Throughout the course, a continuos case study provides in-depth and hands-on experience building and tuning applications in an Oracle environment. Exercises include:

  • Using SQL*Loader and external tables
  • Enhancing applications using Oracle-provided packages
  • Dealing with common problems
  • Establishing database and program-enforced security
  • Using the tuning diagnostic tools including the Oracle automated tuning tools
  • Understanding and influencing the optimiser
  • Creating indexes and alternative storage structures
  • Query and application tuning techniques
