No. This course provides a solid introduction to the fundamental features and tasks within SharePoint 2010, and the concepts taught are very similar to those covered in Course 538, SharePoint^® 2007 Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction.

Will there be overlap with Course 538, SharePoint^® 2007 Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction?

Yes, there will be overlap. While the user interface has completely changed, the basic concepts covered in Course 538 are the same.

Is this an upgrade course?

No, this course will not specifically focus on the new features of SharePoint Foundation 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, and SharePoint Designer 2010. Please see Course 1500, SharePoint^® 2010 New Features Overview, for more information.

My organization deployed SharePoint 2007 technologies, and I'm new to SharePoint. Is this the right course for me?

If you are new to SharePoint and working in a SharePoint 2007 environment, Course 538, SharePoint^® 2007 Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, will provide the fundamental knowledge and critical skills to create, manage and customize SharePoint 2007 across your enterprise.

However, if your organization is expecting to upgrade to SharePoint 2010 in the near future, then you should consider taking this course instead of Course 538, SharePoint^® 2007 Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, because the user interface is so different between these two versions of SharePoint.

What is SharePoint Foundation 2010?

SharePoint Foundation 2010 is the core SharePoint 2010 platform. Users are empowered to build collaborative Web sites where they can share information without complex programming. Information Technology departments can use it as a starting point for building complex collaborative business systems. SharePoint 2010 utilises a variety of modern technologies (ASP.Net, Web Parts, Silverlight, SQL Server 2008) to provide a rich user experience and complex data storage facilities. Either stand-alone or as part of an integrated Information Technology platform, the SharePoint 2010 technologies provide a scalable set of building blocks for all organisations - from small businesses to the most advanced enterprise data centers.

What is SharePoint Server 2010?

SharePoint Server extends the capabilities of SharePoint Foundation 2010 to support more complex, enterprise-wide environments, adding needed services such as Federated Search, Advanced Document and Records Management, Enhanced workflows and detailed business Intelligence capabilities. This course covers the features of SharePoint Server 2010 in addition to SharePoint Foundation 2010.

What is SharePoint Designer 2010?

SharePoint Designer 2010 is a visual design tool that allows for customization of SharePoint 2010 sites and applications without having to write code. Do I need to have experience working in Web development to be successful in this course?

No. This course provides you with the introductory information you need to develop a SharePoint site and to visually transform the site layout using the browser interface and SharePoint Designer 2010. A series of exercises reinforce the concepts taught in class and provide you with valuable hands-on experience.
